Coconut Oil as Deodorant

Coconut oil seems to be the jack of all trades when it comes to natural remedies.Used in hair care to manage frizz, minimize dandruff, and add shine. It is used in skin care ( which I don’t recommend for acne prone skin) for its moisturizing properties. It seems to be able to do it all for such a simple solution.

Coconut oil is a great odor fighter that is a perfect ingredient in natural deodorants. Its only downside is it has no anti-sweat properties, you will need to pair it with a natural sweat resistant ingredient such as baking soda. If you do not want to make your own from scratch some companies have coconut oil based deodorants.

How it’s Made

First, the coconuts are extracted from tall coconut trees when they signal they are matured by their brown outer shell. A green shell will signal that is not ready with coconuts taking 7 to 12 months to fully mature. The white fleshy part of the inside of the coconut is extracted from the hard outer shell and placed in a bin with all the other extracted white flesh.

It is then dried using a variety of methods such as sun-dried or over an open flame to ensure it becomes bone dry. This process usually takes 3 to 5 days depending on the method and quality of the coconut.

It is sent to an industrial seed oil mill where it is processed into an oil. It goes through processes of bleaching and deodorizing because after the process it is a brown smelly oil. The deodorizing process is what transforms it into stinky oil into something that smells fresh and perfect for deodorants.
